The Jessica Simpson Diet is pretty reflective most women today. Just like you and me, the Jessica Simpson diet is always changing, she is always trying something new, and she has waged a frustrating battle with gaining the weight back. She isn’t blessed with super genetics or larger than life willpower, which is why I like writing about her so much. She’s relatable. In light of all this though, answering the question of “What is the Jessica Simpson diet?” is no easy task, as it has changed with the various seasons of her life. One thing I have found to be consistent though throughout her periods of weight loss is that she pinpointed sugar as the main culprit. Before her appearance in Dukes of Hazzard, Jessica was following the Atkins diet, which is famed for its’ quick results, but mocked for its’ rigidity that no one sticks to long term…not even Jessica. On this diet, you enter three phases of carb-limitation. The first phase allows for 20 grams of carbs per day and all the protein and fat you want. The next phase ups this to 25 grams of carbs per day. The final phase reintroduces carbs very slowly and you monitor your tolerance by weighing yourself religiously. Once you maintain your weight, you stick at the carb consumption forever.
The Atkins diet is phenomenal for quick weight loss but is one of the biggest diets for long-term failure around. In an interview, Jessica expressed her own frustration, “Atkins really messed me up mentally. I was so starved for carbs, I binged on them.”
From that point, she was cast in The Dukes of Hazzard and needed to lose weight quickly. She cut out sugar and stayed incredibly active during this time (clocking 2 hours at the gym every day). Shortly after this film, the Jessica Simpson weight reached an all-time low and she went from a curvier body in Dukes of Hazzard to a rather skinny body during filming of the Newlyweds with then-husband Nick Lachey.
Jessica held that figure for a few years, sticking to things like poultry, fish, and vegetables as diet staples. To maintain such a lean physique, Simpson would have cut more carbs than just sugar, probably saving grains and even fruit for a special occasion. She isn’t naturally thin…the girl had to work for it! A body like that certainly doesn’t come with munching on chips and bon bons!
Really, we don’t see a lot of Jessica until she reappears in 2010, sporting a much heavier Jessica Simpson weight. It was at this time in her life that she reported to have enlisted the help of celebrity trainer, Harley Pasternak and the Jessica Simpson diet became (at this point) the 5-Factor Diet. Famed for its simplicity, the 5-Factor Diet is presented in an easy-to-follow series of five’s. 5 meals per day with 5 staple ingredients in each meal, along with 5 workouts per week. The 5 core ingredients in each meal could include things like lean poultry (chicken, egg whites, beans, etc), with plenty of non-starchy vegetables, healthy fats (like olive oil and coconut oil), low sugar fruits (like berries and melons), and healthy carbs (like sweet potatoes and quinoa).
Also during this time, Jessica underwent a detox of sorts, sipping on Chinese tea and adopting a vegan lifestyle (for a short while). She tweeted about the detox, claiming to be following it not for weight loss purposes, but rather to .. During this week-long detox, Simpson drank Pu-erh tea (harvested from China and well-known as being a weight-loss stimulant), and avoided all animal products (including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy). During this time, she also adopted an ancient Chinese practice called “cupping.” What the heck is cupping, you might ask? Uhm, yeah…I had the same question! So, I did some research! Apparently, cupping involves placing heated glass suction cups over the body in an effort to pull toxins out of the body. In her tweet, Simpson said of the detox: “Just so everyone is clear .. this has NOTHING to do with weight! It is about understanding my body through hydration and alkalinty…”
Then comes 2011 when Simpson became pregnant. During an interview on Extra, Simpson admitted to giving in to her cravings quite a bit. ”I had a buttered Pop Tart this morning. I’m eating a lot of stuff that I ate in my childhood. Kraft Mac n’ Cheese, Pop Tarts, Cap’n Crunch. Everything’s filled with sugar. I give in to my cravings. I’m like ‘Yeah, I can do it. We’ll worry about the rest afterwards,’” she admitted. By the end of her pregnancy, she had gained 70 pounds. I find it rather hard to believe that someone concerned with detoxing totally flips the tables a year later during a very important time in her nutritional life, but it’s kinda hard to argue with a televised interview.
I think part of that indulgence pattern was because during her pregnancy, she signed a $3 million contract with Weight Watchers to be their next spokesperson after the baby was born. It’s rather normal to give into cravings more regularly when you know you won’t be able to enjoy them for long.
This brings us to May of 2012 when Simpson gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Maxwell. Currently, she is recovering from her C-section and loving be a new mommy! Little is known about the Jessica Simpson diet but she is reportedly very excited about teaming up with Weight Watchers once she is released from her recovery! I constantly yo-yo dieted my entire adult life until one day I realized: Hey, instead of always being on a diet (and screwing it up!), why don’t I just learn to make the best choices and cut myself some slack?? Jessica Simpson is the latest face on the front of the Weight Watchers campaign. The amount she’s getting paid is undisclosed (although some reports estimate her compensation around $4 million), but one thing’s for sure: she’s getting paid to lose weight! Her plan is to drop her baby weight while on the Weight Watchers program.
Jessica’s goal is to drop her weight back to levels before having her latest baby. It seems Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem are among multiple weight loss companies that are beginning to hire celebrity moms to promote their systems during their attempt to lose baby fat.
Over 60% of moms admit that seeing celebrity moms drop weight so quickly adds additional pressure on them to drop weight quickly as well. Not every celebrity mom loses weight naturally right after birth, but the truth is that so many celeb moms get paid so much anyway that they can afford liposuction and other high-priced rapid treatment.
If there’s one picture of Jessica Simpson that is more well known than any other, it is her famous, daisy duke shot from her film, Dukes of Hazzard. Though her weight has fluctuated over the years, this photo remains as the quintessential derriere shot of all time. I mean, hey…the shorts were named after her in the movie so she had to look hot in them, right??
Let me first say that you don’t get a rear like that sitting around on the couch wishing it would come to you. The day that Simpson got the role, she went to the gym and hired personal trainer, and longtime friend, Michael Alexander. In an interview, Alexander stated: “Any character that has a pair of shorts named after her, you’ve gotta at least try to make the shorts look as good as you possibly can.” Plus “she realized her butt was going to be plastered on 50-ft. screens everywhere,” says Alexander. “That motivated her.”
So what was the Jessica Simpson Dukes of Hazzard Diet and the Jessica Simpson workout that got her 50-ft. screen ready?? Well, it included a lot of squats, a lot of running, and a high-protein/low carb diet (similar to The South Beach Diet, though with some variations).
I wouldn’t recommend you do squats if you’re the typical American woman and want a smaller rear-end. Simpson did squats and lunges only because she didn’t really have a butt to begin with. These exercises work the backside muscles which make them bigger. So only incorporate leg exercises if you (like Jessica) don’t really have a butt to begin with. To bulk up her behind, Jessica did 3 sets of 20-24 reps of lunges and squats with dumbbells that take you right to that failing point. Here is a good workout routine to mimic the Jessica Simpson workout:
- Run 45-60 minutes
- Do 3 sets of 20-24 reps of the following exercises
Overhead Tricep extensions
Elbow Plank (2-3 minutes or as long as you can)
Side Plank (2-3 minutes on each side or as long as you can)
If you want to get rid of your rear, then just focus on the running! Run for 45-60 minutes 5 days per week. If that’s too much, start at whatever your starting point is, and then add 1 minute to each run. You’ll get there…I promise! Jessica exercised 2 hours per day, 7 days per week to don those shorts on screen, and then cut down to 3-4 times per week once they began filming.
As for the Jessica Simpson Dukes of Hazzard diet, she went low carb/high protein, as most celebrities do before a role. Her trainer had her follow his personal “Don’t Eat Crap” diet which focused on non-starchy vegetables, lean meats and fish. Was Jessica perfect in following his advice? No, but she had a backup plan for those moments of indulgence…an extra intense workout the next day. In an interview, Jessica stated: “I can’t deprive myself of things because then I obsess about it and end up eating. I watched my diet and was in the gym to walk proud,” she says. “My body is definitely an accomplishment.”
Jessica Simpson Weight: Jessica Simpsons weight has been an issue of contention over the years. This has not been an easy topic to research and answers have varied widely. What I have tried to do in this article is present the most repeated information (verified by at least 3 reputable sources) over the span of her career…starting with her initial appearance on screen, her smallest weight, and the Jessica Simpson 2011 weight which is the most often searched in google, along with her pregnancy weight. I have also revealed the Jessica Simpson Diet here that she used to lose the weight she has gained.
Okay, so let’s start at the beginning: Jessica Simpson’s career really began as a recording artist in 1999 with her hit song I Wanna Love You Forever from her album, Sweet Kisses. This is when she began dating Nick Lachey and began touring the world and appearing in concert. At just 19 years old and 5’3″, Jessica looks happy and healthy. Although I haven’t found any credible sources on this specific date, I would put her weight in a healthy range of 100-110. I guess this because looking at pictures, she has a small frame and this puts her at a lower end of healthy. No bones are visible and her face is rounded…all signs of a healthy weight.
Fast forward to 2005 when Jessica was at her smallest. Her reality show with husband Lachey, Newlyweds, was in its’ third season and won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show. She made her first onscreen appearance in the movie, Daisy Duke, where she sported the now famous short shorts that got her body national admiration. The movie hit the box office at #1 in its’ opening weekend. At this time, the Jessica Simpson weight loss became a hot sensation and her size was reportedly a 4. Again, looking at the pictures, I’d put the Jessica Simpson weight around 90-100 pounds at this time. Her face is noticeably slender, and her bones are protruding. She does have natural curves though, but I’d say a size 0-2 is more realistic.
Okay so this brings us to 2011, which is the weight most people want to know. In an interview, Jessica revealed that her ending pregnancy weight was 170 and doctors confirmed she gained 40 pounds during her pregnancy. This would put her pre-pregnancy weight at 130 for her 5’3″ frame.
Finally, in her cover photo shoot with Elle magazine in 2012, Simpson reported her weight to be at 170 pounds. ”I’m like 170 pounds and I wanted to pose nude,” Simpson said. “I try to be like 110 pounds. It’s funny to be at your heaviest and feel the most confident. I just take such pride in being a mom! I just love my body more than ever now.” Several reports I read said she gained 40 pounds during her pregnancy, which would put her pre-pregnancy weight at 130… which is about 20 pounds above her ideal.
